I’ve never donated to a Kickstarter project before, but I dig Feminist Frequency and Anita Sarkeesian’s Tropes vs Women series (*coughcoughcough* watch them all). So when I heard about her Tropes vs Women in Video Games Kickstarter…I was all like, “Yes, please.”
It could also have a lot to do with the fact that I’m a woman working in a sector of the video game industry. Specifically, I’m a woman working in a sector of the video game industry at the community level. So, it’s something that actually crosses my mind on the reg.
At the game design and marketing levels, I often feel like my hands are tied. With online MMOGs, game development takes places at a near rapid-fire pace and we rely so much on community feedback to progress — it doesn’t matter how great you think your game is, if you don’t have any players. More often than not, Analytics run the show. The more that a point can be backed up with numbers, the stronger the impact, the likelier that a change can/will take place. At least in this arena…and at least according to my internal, optimistic perception (but also based on a little thing called professional experience...booyah).
I’m looking forward to seeing this project come to fruition.
