Atmosphere - Happymess / Sad Clown, Bad Spring #12

Here’s the deal: To be honest, my interest in going to concerts has steadily waned in the last year. It’s just become super stressful to be in a large crowd of people pushing or getting pushed and jostled around for a couple of hours, even if it’s music that I really like. Even if it’s for free (gasp!). So when someone (usually Schmidt) says, “Hey, [insert artist here] is gonna be in Hamburg. We should go.” I think about how much I just don’t want to be there, how I don’t want to deal with the bullshit and how I’d rather just listen to the albums in the comfort of my living room/bedroom.

I’m making an exception tonight. We’re going to see Atmosphere in the Waagenbau. I’ve wanted to see them live for a long time. I’ve just never gotten around to it until now. The line-up is exceptional (Maeckes & Plan B, Brother Ali) – I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m “excited”, but I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve heard Atmosphere does a good live show and their 2007-2008 releases (the Sad Clown, Bad Summer/Winter/Fall/Spring series, the Strictly Leakage free mixtape, and the album When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold) have been on steady rotation in my mp3 player for just as long.

Slug is probably in the Top 5 of my personal favorite MCs. Technique-wise, not the flashiest one out there, but he raps with such conviction about shit I can relate to.
Atmosphere is one of the rare groups that I think gets better with each album they put out.

So, yeah, I just hope the show doesn’t suck basically…

The Best Taco Bell in Germany

Last weekend, I crossed off a major item on my bucket list. I went to Taco Bell in Germany. "But Raven, shouldn't you aspire to better, healthier things that have a measurable positive impact on society?" I know that's what you're thinking, but I don't really give a crap... because you are not the boss of me.  I wanted Taco Bell, because it's probably the one thing from back at home that I crave the most. Say what you want about it (again, I don't give a crap), but get at me when you've spent years away from your homeland and are unable to acquire whatever nasty-ass comfort food is available wherever you're from. For me, my nasty-ass comfort food of choice is Taco Bell...with Sonic a close second. However, you can't even find Sonic all over the U.S. and I don't find myself craving burgers and hot dogs all the time (plus, those urges are a lot easier to satisfy than a craving for Mexican or Tex-mex).

Saturday Night Videos 5

Lately I've taken to supporting artists via crowd-sourcing sites and the like. I recently touched on that a bit in the last show regarding Chali 2na's Against the Current project. Personally, I think it's an easy/convenient way to support indie artists -- particularly, if you like good music and if you're kinda low on funds yourself. Sometimes there a (reasonable) minimum donation amount to get some new music. Sometimes it's a "pay what you can/want". A few months ago, while perusing The A.V. Club, I read about Rhymesayer artist P.O.S. and how he had to cancel a tour due to medical issues - specifically, because he needs a kidney transplant . Then later - via Facebook posts from other artists - I found out about the fundraiser set up to raise money for his transplant and medical bills. If there's one thing that I learned while living with my ex-ex-ex-roommate, it's that musicians can often be pretty fucked when it comes to medical emergencies. A...

9 Days in Paris (Part 3) - Tourism

I hate tourists. I hate being a tourist. It's a stupid thing to say if you're visiting a place on vacation, especially for the first time, but I'm serious. Tourists do and say the most fucking ridiculous shit. They don't know where they're going and they don't know how to get out of the way of people who do know where they're going. I hate it, but it's a necessary evil sometimes. You have to stumble around and get out all the oohs and ahs and lookie-over-theres(!) -- just to get it all out of your system, so that you can act like a normal human being in a new environment. Take a picture, it lasts longer...and all that other b.s. Paris is full of tourists. Duh. I was one. I said and did some dumb shit and took pictures like a maniac. In all, I took almost 300 pictures. Too many of them were of the Eiffel Tower. From far away, from close up, different angles, etc and so forth. So, I can't knock tourists so much. But I do try to do some things out of ...
